Safe Learners™ Driving Lessons Policy

Safe Learners™ is the trademark of AM & BN Group Pty Ltd trading as Safe Learners Driver Education.

Instructor Engagement & Responsibilities

  • Independent Contractors: Safe Learners™ acts as a platform connecting learner drivers with qualified and licensed driving instructors. Instructors are independent contractors, not employees of Safe Learners™.
  • Learner Due Diligence: While Safe Learners™ verifies instructor qualifications and licenses, learners are responsible for selecting instructors based on their own research and due diligence.
  • Driving Agreements: All driving instruction agreements are solely between the learner and the chosen instructor.

Learner Obligations

  • Valid License: Learners must possess and carry a valid Australian driver’s license (Class C LRN or C) or an equivalent overseas license during all driving lessons.
  • Lesson Preparation & Punctuality:
    • Learners must be prepared for their lesson 10 minutes before the scheduled start time.
    • A 15-minute grace period is allowed for late arrivals. Delays exceeding 15 minutes may result in lesson cancellation with the full lesson fee still applicable.
    • Lessons may be terminated if the learner engages in reckless behaviour, fails to follow instructor instructions, or does not meet the specific conditions of their license (e.g., wearing required eyewear).

Lesson Logistics

  • Lesson Duration & Location: Standard on-road lessons are one hour in duration, including briefing and debriefing. Learners are responsible for providing specific, accessible pick-up and drop-off locations with adequate parking and avoiding areas with inherent ambiguity (e.g., around train stations, and within complex shopping centres).
  • Lesson Start Times: While Safe Learners™ strives for timely lesson starts with the designated instructor, unforeseen circumstances may cause delays or instructor changes. In such cases, Safe Learners™ will prioritise providing the full lesson duration or reschedule the lesson.
  • Instructor Instructions: Learners must always adhere to all instructor instructions and directions.

Vehicle Usage

  • Instructor-Supplied Vehicles: On-road lessons typically commence in instructor-supplied vehicles.
  • Learner Vehicles: Driving lessons in the learner’s vehicle may be permitted after a successful initial assessment by the instructor. Learners are solely responsible for ensuring their vehicle has both compulsory third-party and comprehensive insurance coverage. Safe Learners™ and its instructors assume no liability for any traffic violations or accidents occurring during lessons in the learner’s vehicle.

Booking Procedures

  • Online Booking System: All driving lessons must be booked through the official Safe Learners™ online booking system.
  • Instructor Bookings: While learners may arrange bookings directly with their instructor during a lesson, the instructor is responsible for entering these bookings into the system.
  • Booking Confirmation: Learners will receive a confirmation email upon successful booking entry. Bookings made outside the official system are not recognised. Learners are responsible for verifying booking confirmation and contacting Safe Learners™ immediately if confirmation is not received.

Liability & Disclaimers

  • Property Liability: Safe Learners™ and their instructors are not responsible for any personal property left in instructor-supplied vehicles.
  • Lesson Termination: In cases of reckless behaviour, non-compliance with instructions, or failure to meet license conditions, the lesson may be terminated, and the full lesson fee will remain payable.

Communication & Support

System Issues: If a learner believes their instructor has not entered a booking into the system, they must promptly contact Safe Learners™ to confirm registration. Failure to do so may result in the lesson not being registered or scheduled.

How many hours do I need to complete before I can take my P1 driving test?

If you are under 25, you need to log 120 hours of supervised driving, including 20 hours of night driving, in your logbook. If you are 25 or older, you do not need to complete the logbook hours but must pass the driving test.

Who can supervise a learner driver in NSW?

A supervisor must have a full (unrestricted) Australian driver’s licence, held for at least one year. They must sit in the front passenger seat while supervising.

Are there any speed limits for learner drivers?

Yes, learners in NSW must not exceed 90 km/h, regardless of the signposted speed limit.

Can I drive on motorways and freeways as a learner?

Yes, learner drivers in NSW can drive on all roads, including motorways and freeways, as long as they are supervised by a qualified driver.

What happens if I commit a traffic offence as a learner?

Learners have a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol and drugs. If caught exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 km/h, your licence can be suspended for three months. Learners also have four demerit points, and exceeding this will result in suspension.

How do I book my driving test for a P1 licence?

You can book your driving test online through the Service NSW website or in person at a Service NSW centre. Make sure your logbook (if required) is completed and signed off.
